CONGO YELLOWS

AKA ‘Mpifu’ on the wild, remote Lukulu River in Zambia, Africa.

The River

Perched between the Muchinga Escarpment and the Bangweulu Floodplain in Zambia, the Lukulu River, one of the further south eastern tributaries of the Congo River, flows through Lavushi Manda National Park that very few people venture into. The Lakulu River is normally inaccessible due to its dense overgrown riparian banks and shallow riffle section but our drift boats can get you on it and is the perfect platform to target the Mpifu. This one is definitely not for the faint hearted…

The Fishing

Congo Yellowfish

AKA ‘Mpifu’

labeobarbus stapersii

These formidable fish are incredibly powerful, attacking your fly with fierce aggression and darting off like a blue torpedo towards the nearest structure, showing you their dirty side. A true bucket-list catch for anglers seeking a new challenge—both in terms of skill and physical endurance—while reeling in a fish that grows up to easily 15lb of breathtaking beauty, its vibrant turquoise fins shining both in and out of the water.

Large Mouth Bream and Others

The Lakulu River is also home to a variety of large-mouthed bream species, including nembwe, brown spot, purple face, and thin face and they all smash fly regularly, providing endless fun for anglers between the Mpifu takes. In addition to the bream, the river hosts a diverse range of scelestes and various types of barbs, making it a fantastic destination for those looking to increase their species count. If you're an angler seeking variety and adventure, the Lakulu River is definitely a place to visit.
